Google has finally fully indexed this site. You can look back to the first post to find out when it was and do the math to figure out how long it took. An odd thing about the google index times is that the google index regularly had 2 pages of mine included at anytime. Whenever I’d search on my site name, the google index would return the home page and the most recent post. After I made another post, the previous one would not be returned once the google index was updated. Exactly whats going on with that is something I’d like to know. Maybe google didn’t feel I was important enough to list all of the pages until I hit a certain threshold.
I don’t play world of warcraft, but I do have an account. I ocassionally log in to take a look around or kill some time, but I just can’t get into the game. I think its probably the playerbase that I can’t stand, since I’m spoiled by Dark Grimoire. Often when I login I spend my time thinking about various aspects of running a game or building a community rather than the game itself and today was no exception. Today is patch day, and a lesson in high availability. Continue reading ‘World of Warcraft Patcher/High Availability’
Ok, while this isn’t a business, I think its an ok predictor of how popular a web site can be when it has ok content and very little promotion. The site has gotten a little bit of traffic recently from google and other search engines. It seems my story on the comcast blacklist was a little popular. As a reminder if you like something I write, feel free to blog about it and link back

I hate mail server administration right now. Actually I always hate it. Mail servers probably piss me off since thats one of my weak areas when it comes to administration. My mail server only exists to get support emails related to my online roleplaying game and to send out lost password/registration confirmation messages. For the privilege of sending these out I have to deal with spam quite a bit, and I’m pretty serious when it comes to defeating spam. We rarely get any in our support queues, and I rarely get any in my personal box. Continue reading ‘Comcast blacklist’
My sitemaps admin screen has shown me the first helpful thing yeserday. The Dark Grimoire started using sitemaps on the forums as of the 2nd to try and get all of its posts indexed where they may have been more difficult to find before. I also modified the posting functions of phpBB2 to notify google of sitemap changes everytime someone posts a reply. I don’t utilize priorities yet mainly because the plug n play mod I started with doesn’t and I don’t want to have to figure out a way to quantify important of each thread yet. So, its my BDay. Don’t expect one of my long techno philosophical posts today. I did want to take time out to mention my friends new blog though. His name is Sol and he has quite a few political views. I can just imagine the comments on his blog getting nice and heated with some of the things he has to say.
Check him out when you have time.
I’m adding a link directory to this site to help out webmasters who are trying to get the word out about their site. While in development I’m deciding whether I want to make it a webmaster niche directory or not. I have a while to decide that though, because I still need to create a design that makes the wordpress theme flow with the directory. We’ll see how it goes
MySpace is stuck supporting a crappy interface
0 Comments Published August 7th, 2006 in Web BusinessWhen I was first introduced to myspace I hated it. After thinking back, I realised that I was extremely jealous. When ever I criticise it, I think about a large community web site that I developed and realise I suffer from many of the things I complain about too. I don’t know what was really going through Toms mind when he made MySpace, but I can give you a little insight into the development of my online rpg, The Dark Grimoire. Got my directory submissions done
0 Comments Published August 7th, 2006 in Web Experiment, Link BuildingSo, I got my directory submissions done for 2 sites. I set up an email account to receive the emails at yahoo so I couldn’t get spammed and had been checking it regularly. I am fairly happy with the results so far except for one thing. On the game site that I had submitted, the person had copied my description 4 times into the submission fields. I’m worried that may cause some of the sites to reject my link, which wouldn’t be good. I’m going to hold off on posting a comment on this guy until I get more approvals coming in and see the full results. At least I’ll have the links, but the repeating makes the submissions appear spammy.
Article writing is something I’m going to begin playing with very soon. I’ll modify and submit my tutorial articles so far to an article distribution site so bloggers and ezine writers can all pick up the story and post the article for free. At first that seems like a bad idea because I’d be giving away all my content, but its really not.
When you post an article for others, you are allowed to put an author box at the bottom. In the authors block, you tell a little bit about yourself and can include links. When others pick up the articles, they have to leave them untouched and links intact. When a search engine crawls the article directory or the end site where your article is published, your link is intact and counts as a backlink. So the idea is mutually beneficial to you.
Once google begins indexing my site more regularly I am going to start submitting some of my tutorials and writing to these sites. I also am thinking about offering some of my writer friends the chance to get their names out there. If they write the articles, I’ll pay for the widespread submission to directorys and help them track the progress. In return, my links will be included in the resource box at the bottom. The more links you have, the better you’ll rank.
